Understanding resource usage

Unisphere supports a view of capacity utilization on a storage system throughout its life cycle.

The Unisphere capacity dashboard (see View capacity dashboard for a specific storage system (PowerMaxOS 10 (6079)) for a description of the capacity dashboard for storage systems running PowerMaxOS 10 (6079) and see View capacity dashboard for a specific storage system (HYPERMAX OS 5977 or PowerMaxOS 5978) for a description of the capacity dashboard for storage systems running HYPERMAX OS 5977 and PowerMaxOS 5978) supports you to understand the storage system resources being used in the following scenarios:

Day 1: The storage system is installed and is ready for production:

  • Can I see the physical disk capacity of the system?
  • If I have purchased different disk technology tiers, can I see the capacity of each tier?
  • Can I see how much effective capacity the system was sized for?

Day N: The storage system is in production, and storage is being provisioned:

  • How much more can I write?
  • How much more effective capacity is available?
  • How much physical capacity is consumed?
  • How much storage is allocated?
  • How much of the system is over provisioned?
  • What is the overall system Data Reduction Ratio (DRR)?
  • How much capacity is not enabled for DRR?
  • How much capacity is not reducible?
  • How much capacity is being used by system resources that cannot be used for storage provisioning?
  • How much system capacity is consumed by local replication?
  • How much capacity is available for snapshots?

An overview of capacity terminology is displayed in the following diagram.
